A book reports

If you are into dog rescue…

If you are into Christmas…

If you are into murder mystery…

Here is a book series for you. They are called the Andy Carpenter Mysteries by David Rosenfelt. The Andy Carpenter character is a successful trial lawyer with bags of cash in his bank account. His first love is his dog rescue organization located in Patterson, New Jersey. His wife Lori is a former cop and now gun toting private investigator and mom. Her first love is anything Christmas. And Christmas starts way before the boundaries of the season and after. The two of them have a somewhat snarky in your face and a bit tongue in cheek relationship. Some of the dialogue between the two is snippy Jersey humor but it most obvious they love each other. Which is to say Lori is the protector and Andy is the cowardly but savvy attorney. The author of these books David Rosenfelt certainly knows proper court procedures and absolutely knows the law as written into the various books Rosenfelt has penned. The reader gets a comprehensive and well thought out murder mystery in each book. But what I suggest you do is to download the audio books which are voiced by Grover Gardener. A reader with a ‘Wise guy’ Jersey brogue and an excellent voice actor. Each book has some kind of dog connection in the title. Such as ‘The Twelve Dogs of Christmas’ or ‘Best in Snow.’ But anyway, the reader gets a pretty good murder mystery punctuated with a bit of Jersey dry humor. To me the Andy Carpenter mysteries are escape from the John Grisham or James Grippando legal thrillers.

None the less, here a few of David Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter mysteries:

Title: Best in Snow Andy Carpenter Mystery by David Rosenfelt fiction 2021

Title: Deck the Hounds an Andy Carpenter mystery by David Rosenfelt fiction 2019

Title: Dog eat dog an Andy Carpenter mystery by David Rosenfelt fiction 2021

Title: Silent Bite an Andy Carpenter mystery by David Rosenfelt fiction 2020

And there are about a dozen more. I love Rosenfelt’s sence of humor. Read or listen to the books. If you find the print book at the library they are about 250 pages or more each. Not a long read but long enough to insert between the big name block buster books. Some violence and occasional raw language. Read’em. You’ll like’em.

Butchy the Chicken Whisper, chap 1

If you remember the last time we got together I mentioned to you I am a chicken whisperer. I chose this vocation because wearing cheap wire rim glasses disqualifies me to be what I really wanted to be. Roy Rogers a singing cowboy. Roy Rogers does not wear glasses. I wear glasses. And yes, broke them three or four times. Mostly in a tussle with another second grader. My folks were furious. Not with the other tussler but with me. Me someone who THINKS he should be Roy Rogers but a skilled chicken whisperer. So my tussling capabilities are limited. So off to Dr. Downs’s optic office for another pair. But the bottom line was I never wanted glasses in the first place. MY dad didn’t wear glasses. Tarzan didn’t wear glasses. Only Mrs. Block, my second grade teacher wore glasses. But she was over sixty-years old. Just a granny person needing glasses.

But when I wasn’t chicken whispering, me and my neighborhood friend Donnie were collection agents. A quick and dirty way to make easy money. Back then we collected glass soda bottles and traded them for hard cash. The twelve ounce glass bottle fetched and easy 2-cents. The quart size glass bottle gained us a nickel per bottle. This process would start early on Saturday mornings going house to house asking for empty soda bottles. At first we rang doorbells starting about 7-AM and quickly discovered people didn’t like coming to the door at seven Saturday morning. SLAM! The doors went. Some asked to go around the back in the alley and look in the trash bins. So Donnie and me did. Usually with some success. So we would collect enough bottles to make about 30-cents apiece. Then it was off to our personal banker. Joe Miller ran Miller’s Market on Olympic Boulevard and there we made our financial transactions. We would roll in a red wagon full of empty pop bottles and he would immediately pull out the correct change and place it firmly in our hands. Then We quickly went to the comic book section of Miller’s and chose one comic, two Double Bubble gums, a Snickers bar, and would hand back the hard earned cash to Joe Miller. He must have thought we were just financial wizards. “Firm but even handed”. No one would ever take advantage of me and Donnie for sure.

More about Butchy the Chicken Whisperer next time.

#Tweeting with power, #DonaldTrump, #Wizard of Oz, #Behind the curtain, #Trumps tweets like shooting spit wads, #charles.oldenfatt,

The power of the tweet.

I can only laugh when Trump Tweets. The wizard of Oz comes to mind when Trump tweets. A creepy little cowardly guy sitting behind a large broadcast microphone. Behind a heavy curtain. Up in a castle like structure broadcasting over loud speakers his prattling non-sense. All coming from the land of Oz. But in this case beginning Trump’s tweets in the Oz-like Trump Tower. And unfortunately, later on from the White House. An abomination and defilement to the beloved historic structure.

But what comes to mind the way Trump sends his cyber insults is like a naughty little boy shooting spit wads at you while hiding behind his mother’s apron. Shoot then quickly duck. Let mom take the heat. Then poking around her apron and sticking out his tongue in defiance. Na-ne Na-ne Na-ne.

But worse than that is how the “Media” repeats and re-tweets Trump’s contemptuous juvenile messages. “Oh just passing along the news of the day” they might say. All the while making billions in advertising money off Trump’s bumptious tweets. Outrageousness sells. Common sense doesn’t. None the less, the liberal press and Donald J. Trump. Strange bedfellows or partners in tweeting crimes? Impeach Trump? Or, impeach the media.

#Selfies, #Self-portrait, #Vincent Van Gogh, #charles.oldenfatt, #Millennial, #Post to facebook,

What would Vincent Van Gogh think?
Selfies? What are they? The lazy man’s way to take a portrait of oneself. Some take hundreds or even thousands of “Selfies” and post them on Facebook. Post without rhyme or reason. No captions. No thought at all when taking these self-adoring mug shots. How stupid. How millennial and dumb. My oldest daughter wanted to take a selfies of her and Serena Williams and couldn’t get the job done. So Serena grabbed the cell phone and did it herself. How embarrassing.

#U.S.Congress, #House, #Senate, #EPA, #Medicare, #College, #Infrastructure, www.facebook.com/charles.oldenfatt

Would it be possible, at the end of the decade to get some significant legislation done in congress? Legislation that most Americans would want done. Affordable health care, possible free public college, cleaning up the environment, and maybe building and repairing infrastructure? Could this be possible guys? Forget illegal immigrants, same-sex marriage, walls, and abortion. Hot button issues that distract. Rather legislation with practical application and benefit for all? Come on! You can do it boys and girls.

Your friend, Charles

#Obamacare, #Repeal, #Replace, #American Health care Act, #Single pay, #GOP plan works against the working class.

Opinion:

Do unto others…

What is our responsibility to each other? Is it to lend a hand to our neighbors needing help or to work against them in the name of partisan politics? Repealing Obamacare just because former president Obama was a black Democrat? Is this the way to respond to each other?

Churches and private non-profits don’t have the way and will to pick up such an enormous task as providing health care for the working class and poor in America. It takes heavy lifting. Only a large cooperative of American tax payers can do this. You, me and the very rich have the means to provide affordable health care for those who really need it.

Repealing “Obamacare” is not the right approach. Instead make the Affordable Care Act better. Change it where it is inadequate. However, “Single pay” health care is a better solution and makes it more affordable for all Americans. Eliminating the middle man and it’s high costs. The Republican congress approach will drive up costs and hurt its own working class constituency. Read the details in the newspapers.
